A quarter of British people use herbal milk alternatives

23% of the British used vegetable milk alternatives in the three months to February 2019, after only 19% in 2018, according to Mintel Research. The vegan trend is particularly fueled by young people: 33% of 16 to 24 year olds choose milk alternatives. Environmental issues also play a role, with 16 to 24 people (36%) most likely to believe that dairy farming has a negative impact on the environment.

While milk alternatives are becoming increasingly popular, they accounted for only 2018% of volume sales and 4% of value sales of white milk in 8. They are used differently from cow's milk. Only a quarter of consumers of plant-based milk alternatives use it for cooking, compared to 42% for normal cow milk users. 42% of consumers of plant-based milk alternatives use it in hot drinks, compared to 82% for normal cow's milk users.
