Greenpeace activists protested today at the European Central Bank against the preference given to climate sinners.
Reasons for the protests of the environmentalists: there are enough inside - the process of a more climate-friendly monetary policy of the powerful central bank is proving to be tough. Although ECB President Christine Lagarde announced a new monetary policy strategy last year that also takes climate risks into account, a tangible result is still a long way off. The new plan for spring 2021 was announced, then postponed again and meanwhile the heads of the European central banks even publicly contradict each other about the role of the ECB in climate protection. The climate crisis is a historic challenge, everyone agrees - but what consequences this will have for the European financial system and what role the central banks will play in it has become a heated point of contention. Jens Weidmann, head of the Bundesbank, stands out as a particularly stubborn blocker in climate protection.
