What's swimming there? Certainly few of you have ever seen a manatee. Or?

Profile: Despite its robust appearance, the Dugong is under serious threat. It was hunted for its meat thousands of years ago, but today it is under strict protection. So he is no longer specifically hunted today, but his death can increasingly be attributed to human influences. Either they drown in fishing nets and collide with boats, or their habitats on the coast and in the sea are destroyed by pollution or global warming.

The dugong, also known as the "fork-tailed sea cow", belongs to the family of manatees and is one of the last herbivorous marine mammals in the world. They live up to 70 years and are about 3 to 4 meters long. From the age of six they only get a young animal every 3 to 7 years. They can be found from the Red Sea to the Pacific Islands, but they occur most on the coast of North Australia. Despite their whale-like tail fins, they are not related to whales - in fact, evolutionary history, with the elephants.

In this series we want to introduce you to different animals. Write us in the comments about which species you want to know more.
