Bear Island is in the middle of the ocean. Between Norway and Spitsbergen. We visited the birds there.
Profile: The kittiwake population in Europe has decreased significantly in recent years - and this trend is continuing. They are particularly at risk from a lack of food due to overfishing, as well as from oil pollution from ships and oil rigs. How climate warming affects birds is still under investigation. The relatively small (or only medium-sized) kittiwake gets its name from its stunted fourth toe on its (adult) black feet. She spends most of her life in open water and feeds primarily on fish, squid and crustaceans. They build their nests out of dry mud on steep rocks, but also on windowsills of buildings. At the beginning of June, they usually lay two eggs, of which the firstborn grows up faster and thus has a better chance of survival. Young birds always sit with their heads to the wall so as not to fall out of the nest.
