RWE has a strong influence in North Rhine-Westphalia. Nevertheless, there are many people who defend themselves against the group and fight for a clean future. We were with Susanne, Bernd and Kristina on the way. The family is involved with, among others, Greenpeace.
The Hambi is especially close to their hearts. Together they support the settlements, fight for the preservation of the forest and are overwhelmed by the protests.
The 12.000-year-old Hambacher Wald is home to many protected species. However, he should give way to coal mining by RWE. To prevent this, several thousand people sat down with signatures and demonstrations. In an urgent decision, the Higher Administrative Court of Münster ruled that RWE is not allowed to clear the forest for the time being. It may take years to reach the final decision.
