Balance sheet: job search with disabilities

The current labor market figures show that it is still difficult for people with disabilities to gain a foothold in the job market:

"The unemployment rate favors disabled people has dropped from 9% in the year 2017 to 8,1% in the previous year. However, it was still above the total unemployment rate (2017: 8,5%, 2018: 7,7%). At the same time, employment for disabled people has increased 2018 by 2,4%, ahead of overall employment growth. However, 2018 only had 56,3% of disabled people benefiting, which is well below the overall employment rate, "according to the AMS.

In the broadcast, the AMS points out: "Not all people with disabilities are covered by these figures. In total, around 1,7 million people with disabilities live in Austria. Only a fraction of them have the beneficiary status, namely 110.741 (SMS). The overwhelming majority have none, either because the formal requirements are not met or because those affected did not apply for it. 2018 accounted for 24% of all unemployed people with beneficiary status or health mediation restrictions. "In the past ten years, the situation for applicants with disabilities has greatly improved," says expert Gregor Demblin. "But there has to be a lot more happening on a structural level so that they have the same opportunities as non-disability applicants." Demblin is the founder of the inclusive job platform Career Moves (now myAbility.jobs). He calls for specific business support in order to implement awareness-raising measures and disability strategies. He also proposes more efficient structures in the tendering of jobs for people with disabilities. "There is a dilution in mediation," says Demblin. Specialized, regional service providers individually send candidates who are not always the most suitable. "We recommend setting up a one-stop shop based on the English Remploy model. An exclusive service provider takes over a funnel function for four weeks and makes the best pre-selection for companies. "
