August 9th is the International Day of Indigenous Peoples proclaimed by the UN. According to the UN, more than 370 million people worldwide are counted as indigenous peoples.

👨‍🌾 Indigenous peoples around the world are fighting against land disputes and the exploitation of land resources, often resulting in environmental degradation.

🌍 The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing inequalities and has disproportionately affected indigenous peoples around the world who already suffer from poverty, disease and discrimination. Rights have been affected by the pandemic, particularly equal access to health care, education and natural resources.

📣 FAiRTRADE is committed to protecting indigenous peoples and their rights. Some work in FAIRTRADE cooperatives, allowing them to farm their own land and make independent decisions.
