Let us protect the seas - Greenpeace
The oceans are our allies in the fight against the climate crisis - they cool the planet. But they are out of balance. Overfishing, acidification, garbage swirls under the water surface are just some of the consequences of global overconsumption. Under water, hundreds of kilometers from the mainland, there is a world hardly known to us.
Our earth is a blue planet. 70 percent of their surface is covered by seas. The oceans are home to whales, dolphins, sharks and corals. They produce the oxygen for every second of our breaths, also for us here in Switzerland. They regulate the climate and they give us food.
And yet we risk the future of the seas. Huge fish trawlers plow the seabed, leaving a trail of destruction. Most commercial fish species are on the brink of extinction. Sea creatures drown, suffocate and starve to death through the plastic garbage we dump tons into the sea.
To protect the oceans, we demand environmentally sustainable and socially equitable use of the oceans, a network of protected areas to 2030 that makes up 30 percent of the oceans and effective measures against plastic waste, pollutants and other wastes.
