Iran: Release Yasaman Aryani!
Her commitment to women's rights in Iran is punished with 9,5 years in prison
To celebrate International Women's Day 2019, Yasaman Aryani (24) distributed flowers to the Tehran subway together with her mother and other women. They did not wear a headscarf and talked about their hope for women's rights in Iran. The video of the campaign quickly spread on social media.
On April 10, Yasaman was arrested. Her mother and Mojgan Keshavarz, who had also participated in the action, were also arrested a few days later. Yasaman and her mother were sentenced to nine and a half years in prison for “inciting and promoting depravity and prostitution”, and Mojgan Keshavarz to twelve and a half years in prison.
The young women's rights defender Saba Kordafshari (21) and her mother Raheleh Amadi are also in custody. Saba Kordafshari also campaigned for the abolition of discriminatory veiling laws and spoke publicly about human rights violations in Iran. She was sentenced to nine years in prison.
Yasaman Aryani is in prison because she fights for women to choose how they dress.
