We all like #chocolate, but cocoa often causes deforestation, pollution and social problems. But not the cocoa from our project area in Ecuador.

Women join forces in cooperatives to grow cocoa together, process it into chocolate and sell it. At its core is the cultivation system of the chakra. This is a traditional cultivation method used by indigenous smallholders. Instead of monoculture, the products are grown in a colorful variety for personal use and sale. Cocoa grows next to bananas, corn next to yucca, medicinal plants next to coffee. This is good for the plants and for the rainforest, which is preserved.

In order to protect the Amazon in #Ecuador and at the same time ensure that the livelihoods of the cocoa farmers are preserved, we are working with local and indigenous cooperatives in the GIZ-funded project to establish a sustainable and deforestation-free cocoa supply chain.
