Winter jacket without cruelty to animals: You can trust this down seal of quality

Winter jacket without cruelty to animals You can trust this down seal of quality

The extraction of down feathers is often accompanied by enormous animal suffering. The animal protection organization Vier Pfoten therefore recommends buying products with alternative filling materials. However, if you don't want to do without down, you should pay attention to credible seals of approval, such as the one Responsible Down Standard (RDS), the Global Traceable Down Standard (TDS) or the down pass.

Of course, a lot more winter jackets without down are recommended, such as those from “Save the Duck“, A brand that wants to produce winter jackets that are as sustainable as possible.

The down seal of quality explained briefly

Four paws and the consumer protection of the AK OÖ took a closer look at the three down standards:

The now independent Global Traceable Down Standard (TDS) was initiated by the US outdoor manufacturer Patagonia. The standard guarantees that the down used is neither obtained from live plucking nor from animals from fattening masts. The inspection of parent farms is a mandatory part of the certification.

The one initiated by the US outdoor brand The North Face Standard Responsible Down Standard (RDS), is also believable. Numerous well-known manufacturers, such as C&A, deuter, H&M, Jack Wolfskin, Mammut and The North Face themselves, certify their down products according to this standard. Disadvantages of the RDS are that the controls of the down producers are partially announced and the parent animal farm inspections are not mandatory.

The Downpass standard has its origin and focus on home textiles. Due to criticism in the past, its guidelines have been fundamentally revised, and it now guarantees compliance with animal welfare standards. Here too, live plucking and fattening are excluded.
