Wine, forest, resistance - autumn excursion Rhineland Palatinate

Rhineland Palatinate, also known as "German Tuscany" is especially popular with culture lovers in autumn. The reason for this is not only the grape harvest that takes place at that time, or the colorful play of colors of the Palatinate Forest and the grapevines, but also historically the Palatinate plays a big role. The Hambach Castle is an important symbol of the German democracy movement, a topic that is currently of importance with the state elections in Thuringia. 

All - rounder hike in autumn: 

1. Hike to the Hambacher castle 

From Hambach car park, a beautiful path leads through the forest up to the castle. If you are a bit lazy or want to relax for a wine tour, you can also take the shuttle bus to the front door. 

2. Exhibition in the Hambacher castle 

In the state elections in Thuringia last week, young people in particular voted for the right-wing populist, sometimes right-wing extremist party AFD, which experienced an increase of 12.8%. As is well known, one learns from history why the Hambach Festival, which took place in 1832, is very significant. Here the citizens protested against the repression of the Bavarian administration. In particular, “freedom of the press and freedom of speech” was one of the main demands of the citizens. The exhibition makes you think - in today's democracy it is hard to imagine that people had to fight for these basic rights and still question them. 

3. Detour to the Zeter mountain house 

From the Hambach Castle you can make a mini hike on a ground level path to the Zeter Berghaus. After about half an hour you reach the quaint little house, which in good weather almost bursts from all seams. However, this is not surprising: the scenery is a true work of art, with colorfully striped vineyards and the various cities of Neustadt to Edenkoben before one. In the warm sun are some tables with benches and even loungers, where you can treat yourself with a real Palatine sausage salad or other home cooking. The people are relaxed and friendly and let the tour end with their light spritzer (wine infused with sparkling water).
