Why is Australia locking up so many First Nations children? | Amnesty Australia

Why is Australia attracting so many First Nations kids?

First Nations kids in Australia are 26 times more likely to be incarcerated than other kids. But why? All of the experts agree - prison is no place for a child. It doesn't address the causes of their behavior, and it doesn't reduce recidivism.

First Nations children in Australia are 26 times more likely to be imprisoned than other children. But why?

All experts agree - prison is no place for a child. It does not address the root causes of their behavior or reduce relapses.
When a child is instead exposed to the criminal justice system, they are thrown into a never-ending cycle of trauma, harm, and violence. This shameful reality is worse for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, who are 26 times more likely to be imprisoned than their peers. So what is the alternative?

It's called reinvesting justice.

Reinvesting in justice is led by the community for the community. Instead of failed punitive approaches, the reinvestment of justice is evidence-based. It includes therapeutic and rehabilitative methods that address the root causes of problematic behavior in children in order to improve it—and distract them from the criminal justice system.

Call on the Australian government to fund programs to reinvest in justice:
