When I traveled to Ethiopia in November 2019, there was a very special piece of clothing in my suitcase - my beekeeping suit. Because this time my first honey harvest in Ethiopia was on my travel plan. Finally, together with Kassahun, an experienced beekeeper and long-time employee of Menschen für Menschen, I was involved in the first honey harvest of our bee cooperative in Jeldu. The bee shelter is in a remote area on a hill. What seems almost romantic and secluded is unfortunately also difficult to access terrain, which makes harvesting very difficult. The young beekeepers were naturally curious and were very interested in my knowledge and experience as a beekeeper. The clove oil that is so common with us, for example, whose smell the bees dislike and thus makes work easier, was new for everyone and was accepted with joy. The boys were very proud of the first honey and the exchange with Kassahun was very enriching. We have agreed to meet for a longer "knowledge transfer". Besides, there was also a lot to laugh about. Especially when our project manager Gebeyehu tried on a beekeeping suit and said: "I look like the first Ethiopian on the moon." For me one of my favorite moments of the past year. Greetings from the bee shelter, Alexandra, MfM team Vienna.
