What do engineers do without borders?

In 2015, 17 created sustainable goals that should be adhered to worldwide by 2030. In addition to issues such as equality or the ending of poverty, industry, innovation and infrastructure are at the ninth point of global goals.

"Our vision is a world in which everyone has access to basic infrastructure and can therefore lead a life in dignity." (Engineers without borders)

As a non-profit aid organization, Engineers Without Borders contributes to the global aspirations. Here, acute problems in the areas of water, sanitation, energy supply and bridge construction are solved. It focuses on improving people's living conditions and, above all, on helping people to help themselves, because for the aid organization, effective support means "that a project is only completed when it can independently continue to be people on the ground".

A project: "Water is Light"

"In October, Paul Nyuoh was one of 2017's 12 participants in an 4-week WIL Systems mechanics and electronics training course held at local project partner ACREST in Cameroon. In the middle of 2018, Paul contacted us again about the successful implementation of his project: After the training, Paul returned to his home village, with the aim of directly applying the acquired knowledge and installing a turbine on his own. This should give the villagers the opportunity to charge their mobile phones and smartphones on site and to light their homes. After convincing the board of his village and receiving financial support from his family and friends, Paul was able to build his own turbine and install it next to a river near the village. His turbine delivers - despite some qualitative complaints and installation defects - enough environmentally friendly electricity, so that the surrounding residents of the village can charge their mobile phones and smartphones at the town hall for a small fee. The first completely and independently produced turbine in the country has thus started its service! A villager takes care of the maintenance of the system and the administration of the revenues, while he is involved in the profits for his services. And it gets even better: Paul has also implemented a very charitable and functional profit distribution concept. He only takes a fixed amount to cover his expenses, the rest of the profit goes unconditionally to 50% to the financially needy in the village. "

The work of Engineers Without Borders is based exclusively on donations, membership fees and grants (e.g. from foundations).

  1. Hello Nina, thank you for writing about Engineers Without Borders. A small but important correction: We do not base our work on state subsidies, but only on donations, membership fees and grants (e.g. from foundations).
