More than 1000 people died in the hot summer of 2003 from the heat.
Many of them in particular were older women. That is why the association “Klimaseniorinnen” was founded (www.klimaseniorinnen.ch) and Switzerland sued because it is not doing enough to protect its life. DETEC (Federal Department for the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications), the Federal Administrative Court and the Federal Supreme Court have all rejected the complaint. Therefore, the senior citizens are taking their complaint to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. The Swiss climate action is one of the first of its kind at the Court of Justice and could set a precedent for all of Europe.
