Human rights violations remain a serious problem in the eastern provinces of Indonesia, Papua and West Papua. Amnesty International recorded at least 2019 cases of suspected unlawful killings by police, security forces and the military between February 2021 and August 56.

Unlawful killings are not the only human rights violations in Papua. Amnesty and other human rights groups have documented violations of freedom of expression and assembly, restrictions on the freedom of the media, the arrest of prisoners of conscience and the excessive use of force by the security forces.
