We have lost an average of 69% of all wildlife populations! / Living Planet Report #2022

Nature sends us an SOS 🚨 Our livelihood is in danger. Worldwide, populations of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish have declined by an average of 1970 percent since 69 🦒🦎🐦🐠 We have been publishing the #LivingPlanetReport and the associated Living Planet Index every two years since 1998. Like a stock index, it describes the state of nature.

Nature sends us an SOS 🚨 Our livelihood is in danger.

Global populations of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish have declined by an average of 1970 percent since 69 🦒🦎🐦🐠

We have published the #LivingPlanetReport and the associated Living Planet Index every two years since 1998. Like a stock index, it describes the state of nature. And every two years we have to report new worrying lows 📉

🐟 🦦 Freshwater populations are the fastest we are losing: A look inside Earth's bodies of water and wetlands shows that observed vertebrate populations have fallen by 83%.

Since freshwater environments are closely connected, threats can easily travel from one place to another. This was also shown by the environmental disaster in the Oder at the end of July.

🌴 The tropical regions in the Caribbean or in South America are also particularly badly affected. We are concerned about this trend as these geographic areas are among the most biodiverse in the world. Industrialized countries like Germany are largely responsible for the loss of nature. For example, forests are cleared and water bodies are overfished for our food industry.

🔥 With our consumption and production we destroy nature. We are experiencing a double global crisis: species and climate crises are fatefully linked. If this continues, global warming will drive species extinction even faster in the near future. Conversely, the loss of nature also fuels global warming: Burning rainforests and monocultures store little CO2.

The loss of nature will threaten our water, food and energy supplies if we do nothing. We cannot live without the diversity of nature. Because nature is systemically important.

Together we must protect them! 🌎 #SaveDiversity
