Most of us have taken it for granted that cell phones are not very durable. But why actually? With the #LongLiveMyPhone campaign, the "Right to Repair" coalition, of which RepaNet is also a member, is now calling on the European Commission to make smartphones more durable and repairable. The campaign is supported by the Austrian Ministry of Climate Protection.
Many of us would like to continue using your cell phone if it breaks. Unfortunately, there are often many obstacles - such as a lack of spare parts and high costs. This makes buying a new model a lot more attractive for consumers - although this has a major ecological and social impact when you consider how many different raw materials are in a mobile phone. And under what conditions these are procured and processed. 1,3 billion smartphones are sold worldwide each year; on average, the phones are only in use for three years.
Vote for the right to repair smartphones
That needs to change! At the moment we have a historical opportunity to have the EU regulate smartphones for the first time and make them easier to repair and more durable. To do this, smartphones must be integrated into the upcoming Ecodesign Work Plan. This would oblige manufacturers such as Samsung, Huawei and Apple to develop repairable smartphones and to make spare parts and repair information available to all repair shops and consumers. We would avoid many tons of garbage. For this reason, the "Right to Repair" coalition, of which RepaNet is also a member, has one Petition started. Support them now! Together we demand better products for a better planet!
The Ministry of Climate Protection supports the campaign
Austrian Climate Minister Leonore Gewessler also supports the project to include smartphones in the Ecodesign Work Plan for 2020. Gewessler: “The short useful life of smartphones is an increasing problem. That is why I am committed to a European regulation and the development of relevant ecodesign requirements for smartphones. The Ministry of Climate Protection also supports Right to Repair's #LongLiveMyPhone campaign. ”

Much more important would be the washing machine, the dishwasher, stove, etc. They are larger and only last three to four years, and technically nothing much has changed. Because who buys a new washing machine because the speed of the washing process has increased.
A cell phone around 100 E may have the right to be repaired. But the implementation of a cost-covering solution becomes difficult.
