(Kiev, Aug. 3, 2020) - Ukraine has lifted travel restrictions on residents of non-governmental areas in the east, which largely prevented them from accessing their pensions, and further pushed them into poverty, Human Rights Watch said today. The restrictions imposed in March 2020 in response to Covid-19 resulted in retirees having to drastically cut groceries, medicines and necessary hygiene products for over four months.

The lifting of the restrictions was an important step. However, the Ukrainian government has not changed any other rules that impose undue difficulties on the elderly, who still have to enter the government-held area every 60 days to collect their pensions, instead of appointing a proxy to obtain them for them . There are still significant travel restrictions on the non-governmental side in connection with Covid.
