Traceability of the supply chain of wood products is made easier

The Austrian market leader for the integrated management system, Quality Austria, recently completed the accreditation of ISO 38200: 2018 and the revision of PEFC CoC 2002: 2020. Quality Austria is the first and only certification company in Austria to not only offer certifications according to the FSC® CoC and PEFC CoC standards, but also product certification according to ISO 38200: 2018 to ensure the traceability of wood and wood-based products.

Accredited partner of the wood and paper industry

With the accreditation according to PEFC CoC 2002: 2020 and ISO 38200, Quality Austria has set an important milestone in the wood and paper industry. The company is a big step ahead of other certification bodies, as many do not offer ISO 38200. Austrian companies in the wood, paper, printing and packaging industries have access to a local, competent provider who offers these important certifications from a single source.

The use of wood from sustainably managed forests and proof that the raw material used comes from guaranteed legal sources has become increasingly important in recent years. Critical consumers are increasingly questioning the origin of the items they buy - ensuring the traceability of the wood used is therefore of the highest relevance for the processing industry. “With ISO 38200, our own globally valid and recognized ISO standard was brought into being, which defines the requirements for a monitored supply chain for wood and wood products, cork and lignified materials such as bamboo and products made from it. Companies in the wood industry can, among other things, demonstrate their environmental awareness with certification according to ISO 38200, but they can also use this for risk prevention, ”explains Axel Dick, Business Developer Environment and Energy, CSR at Quality Austria.

Changed requirements for PEFC CoC 2020

Quality Austria has been accredited for the certification program for sustainable forest management Chain of Custody, PEFC CoC for short, for more than ten years. The standard enables the woodworking and processing industries such as the wood trade, sawmills or the paper industry to label wood and paper products from ecologically, economically and socially sustainable forestry. With the 2020 revision, the standard was revised and thus new accreditation requirements were created. After successfully completing the re-accreditation audit, Quality Austria customers can now also be certified according to the revised standard. “Due to COVID-19, the original transition period has been extended. This means that a changeover to the revised PEFC CoC 2002: 2020 by certified companies must be completed by August 14, 2023, ”emphasizes Axel Dick.
