Towards clean energy together: Citizens are driving the energy transition

The latest winning project of the URBAN MENUS Smart City Call (urbanmenus.com/platform-de/) one thing is certain - the call will be put out by the Austrian-Argentine architect & urban planner Laura P. Spinadel. The current award in the Smart City Products & Services category goes to REScoop.eu, the “European Federation of Citizen Energy Cooperatives”. REScoop.eu is a network of 1.900 Energy Communities in Europe that is growing continuously.

REScoop stands for “Renewable Energy Sources Cooperatives” - citizens work together for a future with clean energy. This participatory approach and the feeling of being part of a community with a common goal are critical to the success of REScoops. By involving the citizens with all their different perspectives and ideas, REScoops can pave the way for a just transition and make the cities of tomorrow smarter overall. The idea of the REScoops is also in line with the URBAN MENUS principle, which aims to develop collective visions for urban districts from which all stakeholders benefit.

“The special thing about REScoops is that they are based on a very democratic principle,” says Myriam Castanié, Strategy Manager at REScoop.eu. In REScoops are “citizens from all over the EU who at some point have decided in their local communities that Responsibility for the energythat they consume and that they produce (...). " Together, people invest in projects such as systems for renewable energies, energy efficiency measures and other actions that jointly drive the energy transition. These efforts are increasingly being promoted by laws, guidelines and strategies at all levels in the EU (https://ec.europa.eu/energy/topics/markets-and-consumers/energy-communities_en).

REScoop.eu offers the necessary tools to successfully carry out such collaborative energy projects. From community coaching to a toolbox with valuable tips, REScoop.eu ensures that everyone involved receives the necessary support at every step.

There are many benefits to participating in such energy communities, some of the most important being:

  • Money in the local economy to keep
  • Promoting the social acceptance for renewable energies
  • Individual investments stay affordable
  • Benefit for the local community
  • Measures on the subject of energy
