The Oktoberfest will be environmentally friendly

Masses of beer, tons of meat and thousands of visitors were previously at the Oktoberfest not necessarily for environmental protection. However, as awareness and attention to the environment increased, the concept of the festival has now also been redesigned:

  • CO2 neutral Beer: This year, for the first time, climate-neutral beer was produced at the Hofbräu Festzelt (HB) and all companies that serve this beer. According to Brauereichef Michael Möller since 2010 the CO2 footprint has been scientifically measured, trying to reduce it from the field to the beer mug.
  • Prohibition of Disposable tableware: Since 1991 only the use of reusable crockery is allowed.
  • Ban drinks in cans: Only returnable bottles will be issued for a minimum deposit.
  • stricter Waste separation: At the expense of the innkeepers, each farm is responsible for its own waste. Here are the food, as well as cardboard and other materials separated and pressed.
  • Supply by green power and Ökogas: In some tents, such as the Schottenhammel, the water is made hot by solar cells or LED lamps are used to illuminate the tent.
  • Regional ProductsMore and more companies are looking for shorter transport routes and organic products from meat to roasted almonds and chocolate bananas. Some menus even have vegan dishes to order.
  • Water recycling: The water used for rinsing the pitchers is reused by a total of seven marquees for the tent toilets.

According to the Munich city portal, environmental protection at Oktoberfest has "become a matter of course over the years". The solution to the ecological conflict that many tourists still come by plane from far away, such as Australia or America, should be discussed in Berlin in the future. And despite the effort to make the Oktoberfest more environmentally friendly, it is of course also about the fact that visitors can enjoy the day at the Oktoberfest - maybe even with CO2-neutral beer.
