The extreme effects of our consumer behavior on the environment

179 kilograms - what do you think about when you hear this number? For example, two to three adults weigh 179 kg. 40 cats, 321 basketballs and 15 ballpoint pens also correspond to this weight.

But could you imagine that this is the amount of food that is thrown away each year per EU citizen? We have made it possible for you to interview the person who knows the most about it in an exclusive interview.

Interviewer: Dear earth! Thank you for taking the time today to tell us a few things about yourself!

Earth: Thanks for the invitation! I am happy to be here today!

Interviewer: At first, how are you?

Earth: To be honest, my daily workload is currently extremely high, which makes me feel tired and often run out of strength. A break would definitely do me good.

Interviewer: Oh dear, that's not easy to hear. What is it that is so bothering you?

Earth: Well, the main reason is probably, and I don't like to say that, the people. Although I have to admit that in principle I have nothing against people, but their actions lately are anything but correct. Besides, there are now so many of them that I will soon have no more room for everyone.

Interviewer: You mentioned wrong human behavior. Can you explain that in more detail?

Earth: Imagine having to carry a backpack with 30 kilos of garbage every day and, regardless of where you are, whether at work or at home, other people are smoking next to you at all times. All the people who pass it throw their garbage in your garden and the water that comes out of your aqueduct is totally polluted and inedible. How would you feel under these circumstances?

Interviewer: I see. You have just shown me very vividly what you are suffering from. Do you think we can change that?

Earth: I am aware that it is difficult to change habits that have been acquired over decades. However, it would be a tremendous help if everyone pays attention to small things in everyday life, such as minimizing plastic consumption, consuming food more consciously and generally not living so wastefully. On a small scale, this would mean that if you do not consume all of your meal in a restaurant, for example, you can wrap up the rest and eat it at a later point in time, to name just one example of many. If everyone tried to act like this, the aforementioned 179 kilograms per EU citizen would not be thrown away.

Interviewer: Thanks for your time, I hope this interview will have a positive impact on some people.
