#Tax transparency for corporations: has the blockade of the ÖVP finally come to an end?

For many years the ÖVP has been fighting in the government against the fact that corporations in the EU have to make public how much profits they make where and how much taxes they pay. Numerous finance ministers have been at the forefront against this. But since December 2019 this should actually be the end of it. A parliamentary resolution obliges the government to vote for more tax transparency for corporations at EU level. Still, the government continued to try to delay.

An EU meeting took place on Friday, January 22nd, 2021, at which it was sounded out whether a majority of the EU countries would agree to the project. Since only one vote was missing in the end, it was assumed that Austria would pave the way for more tax transparency. But it turned out differently: Austria made no clear announcements and delayed the meeting with legal questions. They want to know whether unanimity (which can never be achieved) instead of a majority is necessary. A question that has been officially resolved for years. The meeting ended with Austria abstaining, which would have meant a further standstill.

After this delay tactic was leaked to the media on Friday evening, Attac (and also the SPÖ) reacted with severe criticism on Saturday. Lo and behold: on Monday everything was suddenly different. The government claimed they had been misunderstood. Obviously you will agree and this has already been communicated to the Portuguese EU Presidency. Nevertheless, it is unclear how it will continue until the hour.

Should the government actually give up its delaying tactic, it would be a great success for Attac and everyone who has been campaigning for more tax transparency for corporations for years. Especially now that corporations are collecting billions in Corona aid, it is important that there is an EU vote quickly - and that Austria has to show its colors. We will continue to monitor closely how the government behaves!
