On March 21, the Taliban pledged to reopen all schools in Afghanistan, ending a seven-month de facto ban on girls attending secondary schools. Two days later, as many girls were preparing for the first day of the new school year, the Taliban reversed that decision and announced that secondary schools for girls would remain closed - indefinitely - until the Taliban implemented policies they felt they shouldn't According to compliant are "principles of Islamic law and Afghan culture", including further restrictions on schoolgirls' clothing.
The reversal is cruel and provocative as it comes days before an international donors' conference on March 31 that aims to raise $4,4 billion to help alleviate the desperate humanitarian crisis gripping the country.
