Survey: This is how consumers in Austria decide

According to a representative survey on behalf of the trade association, 90 percent of Austrian consumers pay attention to the factor sustainability when shopping for food. The broadcast said: “Around 44 percent of Austrians state that the production conditions for food have played a more important role in their purchases since the outbreak of the corona pandemic than they did before the crisis. (...) more than a third of consumers have increasingly turned to organic products on the shelf since the outbreak of the pandemic. "

In the selected product groups, “sustainability” plays a role in their purchase decision for the following percentage of respondents:

  • Food: 90%
  • Electrical appliances: 67%
  • Fashion: 61%
  • Cosmetics: 60%
  • Furniture: 54%
  • Toys: 48%

This clearly puts the food industry first when it comes to the importance of sustainability. In other product groups, this claim has not yet become so clearly established. “Less than a third of consumers give up buying a piece of clothing if it is not produced sustainably. At least a quarter say they have been paying more attention to the production conditions of textiles since Corona. 19 percent of those surveyed are of the opinion that they are not sufficiently informed about sustainable fashion, another 15 percent generally rate sustainable fashion as too expensive ”, the survey shows.
