SoLaWi, Foodcoops & Co. - an overview of alternative shopping options

Food at dumping prices, well-traveled fruits from overseas and loss of biodiversity in our nature: “With the side effects of our diet, eating can pass away! The good news is that there are now a lot of new purchasing networks all over Austria that make it easier to buy regional, organic products, ”says Gabriele Homolka, nutritionist at DIE UMWELTBERATUNG.

The alternatives to discount stores and Co. are now diverse. SoLaWi, food coops or organic boxes support the work of organic farmers and sustainable consumption. For your orientation, here is an overview:

  • SoLaWi - CSA

SoLaWi is the abbreviation for "solidary agriculture" and is also called "Community Supported Agriculture" - CSA. The consumers pay an annual fee and regularly receive their harvest share. The customers all share the risk of a good or bad harvest.

Foodcoops are shopping communities. Several people and households come together and organize their joint purchases directly from producers on the farm. This not only supports regional producers, but also always purchases exactly as required and food waste is minimized.

  • organic boxes

Fresh, regional organic fruit and vegetables ordered online and delivered (in a box) directly to your door - more and more consumers appreciate this service.

  • Delivery of organic food

Ready-made dishes can also be ordered more and more in organic quality. DIE UMWELTBERATUNG has a list of delivery service companies for organic food and regional, seasonal food under: www.umweltberatung.at/bio-essen-lieferservice

Got hungry? On www.umweltberatung.at/biolebensmittel DIE UMWELTBERATUNG has put together the contacts to food coops, farms based on solidarity, organic box farms and organic delivery services.
