Small but nice: tiny houses

The housing shortage has become a noticeable problem in many large cities - in some places it is no longer conceivable to find an apartment for less than 500 euros. Finding a flat is often a nerve-racking process for students, pensioners or marginally employed people.

To counteract this problem, “tiny houses” were designed in the USA. One or the other may still remember Peter Lustig's extended construction trailer from “Löwenzahn” since the 1980s. If you still can't imagine what the term “tiny houses” means - it's exactly what you think of under the term: a very small house. Here, people can live minimalistically in a few square meters and travel around the world with their house on four wheels. The small houses take up little space, they contain everything a person needs to live and are affordable for most. Due to the lower consumption of resources compared to a normal-sized house, the small houses are often very environmentally friendly due to lower CO2 emissions.

There are many different types of tiny houses. An often criticized aspect of small houses is that they are not barrier-free and are therefore less suitable for older people. Bryce Langston shows on his YouTube channel "Living Big in a Tiny House" the different designs that people around the world have considered for their living space. These include, for example, “Tiny Houses”, which are barrier-free and absolutely suitable for older people, so that they can live for a long time independently and without restrictions. The “tiny houses” are often self-built and adapted to personal taste. There are no limits to your imagination, such as an enchanted Hansel and Gretel Cottage in the middle of the forest, or a house made from recycled shipping containers that is completely self-sufficient. In the meantime there are even Familieswho live in the small houses. (LINK)

Of course, tiny houses also have some disadvantages that people need to consider before moving into a small house. Large game evenings with several guests could be difficult and the approval process should also be a complex process, especially in Germany. In order to avoid these possible problems, a trial stay is definitely advisable. Here is a video of the most creative designs on the channel “Living Big in a Tiny House” from 2019.
