(Seoul, September 14, 2021) - Young lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in South Korea are experiencing isolation and abuse in schools, said Human Rights Watch and the Allard K. Lowenstein International Human Rights Clinic at Yale Law School in a report released today.
The 76-page report "I Thought of Myself as Defective: Neglect of LGBT Youth Rights in South Korean Schools" notes that bullying and harassment, lack of confidential psychosocial support, exclusion from the curriculum and discrimination are based on Gender identity is a particularly pressing concern for LGBT students. The South Korean government should implement anti-discrimination protection measures and ensure that LGBT youth have supportive resources to protect their health and education.
