The dense, green beech forests of the Carpathians look like something out of a fairy tale book. It is probably not without reason that the Zacharovanyj Kraj National Park in the Ukrainian Carpathians bears his name: translated it means "Enchanted Land". The magic of the national park does not only lie in its forests.
In fact, it is a mosaic of different habitats, including different bog types. Above all, hillside and spring bogs can be found here. They are of national and international importance for biodiversity and climate protection. In the past, the bogs were particularly affected by drainage.
Therefore, NABU and its partners started a project in 2021 to restore the near-natural water balance of the "Chorne Bagno" bog in the Zacharovanyj Kraj National Park. The areas are located in the Irshava district in the Ukrainian region of Transcarpathia in the west of the country.
The project should be completed in the coming months. Since the end of February, however, the war of aggression against Ukraine has presented the project with enormous challenges. The measures are on hold until the situation in the country has stabilized. A lot has already been implemented in the months before: In this video, experts provide insights into the specific project measures to restore the moor.
