Repair & DIY urbanism: Politics can still do a lot

The Institute for Higher Studies (IHS) and DIE UMWELTBERATUNG have researched urban practices of repairing, swapping, sharing, upcycling, etc. in the project "Repair- & Do-it-yourself-Urbanism" (R & DIY-Urbanism). Measures and potential of Repair and Co. were examined both internationally and specifically in the 7th and 16th districts of Vienna. The authors come to the conclusion that the potential of R & DIY urbanism is far from being exhausted. According to experts, such initiatives make valuable contributions to stimulating the economy and the districts, to climate protection and resource conservation, as well as to social integration.

In "Recommendations for action for a socio-ecological repair & do-it-yourself urbanism" the authors Michael Jonas, Markus Piringer and Elmar Schwarzlmüller give various recommendations for action to politics and administration.

These include:

  • Promoting civic initiatives,
  • Subsidizing events,
  • Holding a high-profile R & DIY festival,
  • Establishment of exchange boxes in the districts,
  • Supporting the brokerage of rejects from economic actors,
  • Establishment and promotion of re-use centers,
  • Promotion of repair cafes as well
  • various fiscal measures,
  • the introduction of a right to repair and much more

More detailed explanations of the individual proposals can be found in the report.
