Reflection of our society

We speak of love and spread hate; we speak of honesty and communicate in lies; we speak of friendship and do not trust; we speak of tolerance and are prejudiced against every new face we meet; we speak of harmony and we let go of envy and jealousy dominate. We talk about freedom and block our real self from the outside world. We talk about inner peace and hide behind a layer of facades. We talk about the here and now and live in an illusory world. We talk about changes and act we speak and speak without actually speaking.

When we talk about values, a certain picture emerges in our mind's eye. An image that reflects our society. An image that is about our everyday life, about our lives and about us humans.

Our everyday life is dominated by values and comparisons. We make something, assign it a value and then compare it with similar products. We compare prices with each other, volume discounts, special offers, savings campaigns. We compare and compare without realizing that we are gradually starting to project this behavior onto our society. We compare other people with one another, but above all we compare ourselves. We compare and evaluate, always with the ulterior motive of being better. Looking better, dressing and presenting yourself better. We concentrate on purely external appearances, but nobody speaks of good deeds, of our qualities, of what makes us human. Hardly anyone is interested in the emotional world behind a person. For the fears and joy that they share. We live and compare and forget what really matters. We forget each other, about ourselves. And that, my dear listeners, is our society.

A society that you and I are a part of. But have you ever wondered who you actually are? You are not just a part of something big, not just a person. You are a voice, a helping hand, an open ear. You are unique, regardless of your origin, skin color, race or religion. Regardless of your gender or sexual orientation. You don't have to reform our electoral system or become the next Maria Theresa to use your vote. You are you and that is perfect enough. Because sometimes it is enough to reflect on our screwed up values and at least in this way - openly, honestly and openly - to improve a small part of this world. Not in a democracy, not in the education system, but rather as a person for our fellow human beings.

So I ask you again: who are you? Or rather: who do you want to be?
