(Perth, September 15, 2020) - Three alleged suicides in Western Australia's prisons in the past four months have underscored the urgent need for better mental health care and support for prisoners with mental illness, a Human Rights Watch report released today said.

The 42-page report, "He Never Comes Back: People With Disabilities Die in Western Australia Prisons" almost examines the serious risk of self-harm and death for prisoners with mental illness, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners, in Western Australia 30 years after the Royal Commission in 1991 in Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. A Human Rights Watch analysis of coroners' investigations and media reports between 2010 and 2020 found that approximately 60 percent of adults who died in prisons in Western Australia had a disability, including mental illness. Of the 60 percent, 58 percent died as a result of lack of support, suicide, or violence - and half of those deaths were from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners.
