Phonegate: Smartphone manufacturers are cheating on radiation levels

Like Dieselgate, so Phonegate

The automobile manufacturers had cheated with software tricks (testmode vs. everyday operation) with the emission values of their diesel engines => Dieselgate!

In exactly the same way, manufacturers of smartphones, tablets etc. have manipulated the SAR values (radiation) of their devices downwards using measurement technology tricks. In practice, the user has values that are 3-4 times higher than those specified by the manufacturer => Phonegate!

The French government agency Agence national des fréquences (ANFR) measured the radiation values of hundreds of mobile phone models himself with the result:

Nine out of ten models that had been tested since 2012 exceeded the reported SAR values, in some cases significantly, and in some cases even exceeded the already very high legal limits!

The highlight: ANFR measured the radiation intensity directly on the device. Just as cell phones are used by most people in practice, i.e. calling directly on the ear and wearing it on the body.

In contrast, the manufacturers reported SAR values that were measured at a device distance of 25 to 40 millimeters from the body. Because the electromagnetic radiation decreases squarely with the distance from the source, the reported values quickly drop significantly. In this way, the manufacturers were able to sell phones that actually emit more than stated and that still comply with the limit values with this trick...

In France, this scandal has already made waves and there have already been recalls. Many manufacturers had to carry out software and hardware updates...

dr Marc Arazi from phonegatealert.org discussed this in detail in October 2019 at the international symposium "Biological effects of mobile communicationsby Competence Initiative lectured in Mainz:

International Phonegate scandal

Eyewash SAR value

Here you have to realize what is associated with SAR value (Smore specific Aabsorptive Rate) is actually meant and how this value is determined.

Under Smore specific Aabsorptive Rate one actually imagines how much radiation is absorbed. However, mobile phones and smartphones do not absorb radiation, they emit some!

This value is determined by exposing a physical body, a measuring phantom filled with a saline solution, to the radiation of the respective device with its maximum transmission power at a distance of 5 mm. The resulting heat effect in the phantom is used to determine how much radiant heat (Watt) is absorbed per kg of weight - hence the absorption rate.

In practice, the values can be lower because, depending on the reception situation, the device does not work with maximum transmission power. The current limit here is 2 W/kg.

However, the measurement in watts / kilograms is grossly simplifying, individual differences in physique and sensitivity are not addressed here, and only the short-term heat effect is considered, long-term biological effects are not taken into account - even deliberately ignored.

However, one can definitely say here – if the measurement was real – the lower the SAR value, the less the device emits. However, you always have to see the respective reception situation here, if the reception is poor, the devices then radiate "Full Power" in order to be able to establish a connection at all. it is advisable, if at all, to only use the devices for a short time if the reception is reasonably good...

Parallel Dieselgate – Phonegate:

Just as car manufacturers are desperately clinging to old, outdated and proven environmentally harmful technology (combustion engines) because they have developed this technology very far and shy away from investing in new technologies because of financial risks, the mobile phone industry is doing exactly the same thing by desperately sticking to the Technology of data transmission via pulsed microwave and works with all tricks, even dirty ones...

From "Dieselgate" to "Phonegate"

Class action lawsuit in the US against Apple and Samsung

The Chicago Tribune tested several smartphones for the radiation emitted. It came to the conclusion that some devices emit more radiation than permitted, and the applicable limit values were even exceeded by up to 500%.

The Atlanta law firm Fegan Scott LLC announced on August 25.08.2019, XNUMX that it had filed a class action lawsuit against Apple and Samsung. They accuse the corporations of endangering the health of the device users through the supposedly increased radiation levels (the results of a new investigation by the American authority FCC are still pending). In addition, the advertising for the products is misleading and downplays, even completely ignores, the dangers of radiation emitted by smartphones. Apple and Samsung are accused of using slogans like "Studio in your pocket" to suggest that smartphones can be carried in your pocket without risk.

The lawsuit refers to the Chicago Tribune and several studies on the harmfulness of radiation. None of the plaintiffs claim to have actually suffered any illness or health problems. Instead, they're suing Apple and Samsung -- two of the top three smartphone makers in the world -- "for misleading people into buying potentially dangerous devices."

Due to this development, Apple warns against using the iPhone 7 directly on the head...

Conclusion

In principle, it is best to avoid wireless technology, i.e. to use a corded telephone for telephone calls and a wired computer for the Internet.

However, if you have to use a mobile phone (for professional reasons), it is advisable to use the integrated hands-free function and to hold the phone away from your body when making a call. A hands-free device via Bluetooth should be rejected because of the radio load and with a corded hands-free device the cable can act as an antenna...

Likewise, the mobile should not be carried close to the body (e.g. trouser pocket).

  1. Thank you for the (and previous) amount. Unfortunately, much is still unclear. According to Handysendung.ch, since 2016 measurements should also be carried out at a distance of 0,5 cm. https://handystrahlung.ch/index.php

Fact from personal experience: There is currently no top cell phone available with less than 1W/kg. All values according to mobile phone model (but probably manufacturer information!) https://handystrahlung.ch/sar.php
