Overshoot Day - a sad day

On the 1. August was the global Overshoot Day. Since the global overshoot began in the 1970 years, this is the earliest date this sad day takes place.

On Overshoot Day, mankind has used up the budget of nature for each year. The resource consumption is calculated by the research organization Global Footprint Network, The Overshoot day means "that humanity of the 1. January to 2. August has consumed as much of nature as the earth can renew throughout the year. In other words, we humans use nature 1,7 times faster than ecosystems can regenerate. That means we now need 1,7 Earths ", according to a statement from the Global Footprint Network.

The positive: We can reverse the trend. If every year Earth Overshoot Day were postponed to 4,5 days into the future, we would live within 2050's capacity again.

"Our planet is finite, but our options are not. Living within the resource budget of our planet is not only technologically feasible, but also financially beneficial. It's our only chance for a prosperous future, "says Dr. Mathis Wackernagel, CEO of Global Footprint Network and developer of the Ecological Footprint.
