Organic agriculture and consumption in Austria: current figures


Current figures for 2020 according to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Regions and Tourism

Organic farming in Austria: 

  • 24.457 organic farms, around 232 more than in 2019. 
  • This corresponds to a share of around 23 percent. 
  • More than a quarter of the agriculturally used area was organically farmed, in total that is 677.216 hectares. 
  • The organically farmed arable land makes up a fifth of the total arable land in Austria. 
  • A third of the permanent grassland in Austria is farmed organically. 
  • 7.265 hectares of vineyards are cultivated organically, that is 16 percent of the vineyard area in Austria.
  • In the orchards, the organic share is 37 percent.

Consumption behavior of Austrians:

  • Milk and eggs have the highest organic share, potatoes, vegetables and fruit yoghurt are above average. 
  • An average household bought organic fresh products worth 2020 euros in the first half of 97.
  • This corresponds to an increase of 17 percent compared to the previous year. 
  • Almost every Austrian has used organic products at least once in the past six months.
