On the trail of the southern right whale: whale watching at home

Tahi, Rua, Toru, Whā, Rima and Wiremu are southern right whales - a rare species of whale known as Tohorā in the Maori language. As part of the project “Tracks of the Tohorā” the University of Auckland For the first time, the routes of the whales can not only be followed live by experts.

On Research project website You can see in real time where Tahi and his companions are. Southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) grow up to 18 meters long and were critically endangered for a long time. Meanwhile the population is recovering a little. You are usually traveling between the 30th and 50th parallel south latitude.
