Do you know what happens to your clothes when you throw them in a donation container? A lot of them end up at the Kantamanto market in Ghana's capital Accra. Do you know what happens to your clothes when you throw them in a donation container?
Much of it ends up at the Kantamanto market in Ghana's capital Accra. It is one of the largest second-hand markets in the world. Up to 15 million items of clothing arrive here every week. What do we do with all the textiles?
Resource conservation expert Viola Wohlgemuth and photographer Kevin McElvaney were in Ghana with a team from Greenpeace Africa to document the effects of increasing overconsumption through (ultra) fast fashion on life and nature in West Africa. In our four-part series “Clothes make trash: The reality behind the fast fashion industry” we show you the extent of overproduction and introduce you to people from Ghana who want to make a difference.
