New ban on corona state aid for corporations in tax swamps has practically no effect

Parliament decided on Wednesday to ban corona state aid to companies based in tax swamps.

But well-intentioned is not always done well: The toothless “EU black list” serves as a criterion for what a tax sump is - and there is, in fact, no important corporate tax sump on it.

Corporations in the most important EU tax swamps - such as Luxembourg, the Netherlands or Ireland - will easily receive corona grants. Almost all other countries that are used for corporate tax tricks are also missing.

The following solution would be more effective: State support should only be given to companies that can demonstrate that they are not artificially shifting their profits - or that close branches that are primarily used for tax tricks.

This requires corporations to publish reports of their global profits and taxes per country. The federal government should finally finally give up years of resistance to mandatory tax transparency for corporations in the EU.

We have a right to know where corporations make their profits, where they move them and how much tax they pay - and not just when they apply for government aid!
