(Bangkok, December 2, 2021) - Myanmar security forces deliberately surrounded and used deadly force during the anti-junta protests on March 14, 2021 in Yangon's Hlaing Tharyar community, Human Rights Watch said today. Soldiers and police armed with military assault rifles shot trapped demonstrators and those trying to help the wounded, killing at least 65 demonstrators and bystanders.
After the military coup on February 1 against the democratically elected government of Myanmar, demonstrations broke out in Yangon and other cities. The police and the military repeatedly used lethal force against largely peaceful demonstrators in violation of international human rights law. The deadly shootings in Hlaing Tharyar are characterized by the large number of people killed and the apparently deliberate use of lethal force by the security forces.
