The widespread internet posting of sexual images of women and girls without their consent, widespread in South Korea, has devastating effects on victims. The government should do more to prevent and respond to these digital sex crimes.
Despite legal reforms in South Korea, women and girls who are victims of digital sex crimes - online and technology-enhanced gender-based violence - face significant difficulties in prosecuting criminal proceedings and civil redress, in part due to ingrained gender inequality. Digital sex offenses are crimes involving digital images - almost always of women and girls - that are recorded without the consent of the victim, not passed on by mutual consent, or sometimes manipulated or falsified.
