The Wadden Sea is a unique habitat and home to seals, porpoises and many other creatures. New gas production projects could threaten this unique ecosystem. The plans of the Dutch ONE-Dyas are not only another massive threat to the climate, but also to biodiversity in the North Sea. The noise of the construction work and the pollution caused by the operation of such platforms puts seals, porpoises and many other creatures at risk.

Germany's current gas policy promotes new fossil projects. One in the Wadden Sea near Borkum. Around twenty kilometers northwest of the North Sea island of Borkum, in the immediate vicinity of the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea, the Dutch company ONE-Dyas wants to develop a new natural gas field. From the end of 2024, ONE-Dyas wants to produce gas from a total of twelve wells here - on both Dutch and German territory. In a first phase, the group plans to produce 4,5 to 13 billion cubic meters of gas. The combustion would produce up to 26 million tons of CO2, which would roughly correspond to the annual emissions of Rhineland-Palatinate.
