Moria burned down: take in the refugees

Berlin / Moria (Lesbos). The completely overcrowded Moria refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos is largely closed on Wednesday morning (9.9.) burned down. By doing planned camp for 2800 people most recently lived almost 13.000 refugees and migrants, most of them from war and crisis areas in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and various African countries. There are hardly any toilets for the people there only one tap for 1.300 residents. Medical care is poor. "This is not a place where anybody should live," said Liza Pflaum from the aid organization Pier after a visit to Moria in early March the radio station Germany Radio.

Nevertheless: The Greek government locks up the refugees on Lesbos until other European countries contribute more to the accommodation costs and take in at least some of them. Most of the refugees did not want to go to Greece, but to Germany, Sweden or other Western European countries, for example.

Because Europe does not agree on a distribution of the refugees and governments like those in Poland, Hungary and Slovakia refuse to accept migrants, some of the people have been stuck in the overcrowded camp for years.

Several German cities and municipalities as well as the states of Berlin and Thuringia had long since offered to take in people from Moria. But the German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer refuses to give them permission. Germany is only allowed to let refugees from Moria into the country in consultation with the other countries of the European Union. Other politicians, especially from the CDU, are “against German going it alone”.

Numerous organizations in Germany, Austria and other countries collect signatures for the people from Moria to be distributed to the other European countries. Here For example, you can sign the German Greens' appeal for this.
