More than 800 tons of old batteries end up in the garbage in Austria every year

870 tons of old batteries and old accumulators were disposed of in the residual waste in Austria in 2018. In other words: four out of five batteries are properly disposed of in collection boxes etc., the rest are carelessly thrown away. However, those who simply throw empty batteries and old accumulators into the residual waste are wasting valuable raw materials. In the case of lithium batteries, these are plastic, graphite, copper, aluminum and the eponymous lithium.

Elisabeth Giehser, managing director of Elektroaltgeräte Koordinierungsstelle Austria GmbH (EAK) believes that the urban population and young people in particular have a lot of catching up to do. The nationwide campaign "Bring us empty!" should now improve the collection rate. Among other things, an interactive map on the website helps to find the locations of collection points in the vicinity.

Now dispose of it properly: Get rid of old batteries and accumulators from drawers and from the residual waste.
