Minus 15% greenhouse gas emissions in the European energy sector

The annual EU progress report on climate protection has reappeared. In summary, the result: greenhouse gas emissions in the 27 EU member states fell by 2019% in 3,7 compared to the previous year, while GDP grew by 1,5%. Compared to 1990 emissions have been reduced by 24%.

In the press release of the EU Commission it also says: “In 2019, the emissions that fell below the Emissions trading system (EU ETS) are falling: compared to 2018, they fell by 9,1% or around 152 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents (million t CO2-eq). This decline is primarily due to the energy sector, where emissions have been reduced by almost 15%, primarily by switching electricity generation from coal to renewables and gas. Industrial emissions fell by almost 2%. The aviation emissions checked as part of the EU ETS, ie currently only emissions from flights within the European Economic Area, rose again slightly (compared to 2018 by 1% or around 0,7 million t CO2-eq). There was no significant change compared to 2018 for emissions that are not covered by the EU ETS, ie those that are generated in sectors of industry that are not covered by the EU ETS or in areas such as transport, buildings, agriculture and waste management.
