The majority knows: Sustainability is more than environmental protection

A survey on behalf of the Austrian Association of Cooperatives (ÖGV) comes to the result that the desire for a more ecological economy and a more sustainable life has increased due to the health crisis. "More than 60 percent of those surveyed stated that sustainability is becoming increasingly important for society in Austria," says Paul Eiselsberg, head of the study from IMAS.

The issue of sustainability is a major concern, especially for women and families with children. “The study participants are most likely to spontaneously associate environmental protection with sustainability (34 percent). Austrians are particularly sustainable when it comes to separating waste (42 percent), using water in a way that conserves resources (36 percent) and using energy from renewable sources (28 percent) ”, according to the ÖGV broadcast.

According to the study, 56 percent of the population is aware that the topic of sustainability is more multifaceted than the concept of environmental protection alone. For 62 percent, the topic of sustainability is "future-oriented". It is noteworthy that almost 40 percent of Austrians already see great opportunities for the domestic economy when it comes to sustainability and that almost a third assume that more jobs can be created in Austria as a result of the “green trend”. Sustainability is also often very strongly characterized as "regional, personable, social and conscientious", as the study shows.
