Limits - Editorial by Helmut Melzer

Helmut Melzer

As an idealistic one-person business with no timely prospect of income, my limitations are shown to me every day. And yet, even after five editions of Option, the joy of working with purpose and purpose is still great. The feeling of happiness is indescribable, when the financing of an edition has barely succeeded - thanks to the support of some companies that accompany my path to positive change.

No question: to be allowed to do a work that also gives pleasure is a privilege. Trapped in the impulse of needy work, for most people there is little room for self-fulfillment. Others, with whom life has better meant, may face the constant struggle for career success. But many also recognize that personal happiness has nothing to do with income and value creation.

We are part of a materialistic society that defines itself primarily through financial success. Considering that man, as the culmination of evolution, has developed an incomparable intellect over hundreds of thousands of years, this seems absurd. Our idols are billionaires, Hollywood stars, football professionals. Why not philosophers, human rights activists or environmental activists?

We set ourselves the real limits, in our heads. A value system into which we have been born does not have to accompany us for a lifetime. Man is born to cross borders.

As a long-time journalist, I asked myself what would actually make sense from a journalistic point of view. You can see my answer here: Option. Showing alternatives in an idealistic way - for positive developments in our society.
