Every year 8 million tons of plastic pollution are released into the world's oceans, and in the US alone 32 million tons of plastic are burned or buried in landfills. Almost every piece of plastic starts out as a fossil fuel, and greenhouse gases are released at almost every stage of the plastic life cycle. These plastic pollution costs to human health are enormous, especially in black, brown, indigenous, and low-income communities, which are where most of the plastics manufacturing facilities and plastics incinerators are located.

John Hocevar, our ocean campaign manager, explains the impact of plastic pollution in the Anacostia River near his home in Washington, DC, and how recycling is the wrong solution to tackling the plastic crisis.

The 2021 Plastic Pollution Liberation Act is a comprehensive law that addresses the plastic pollution crisis by:

- Shifting responsibility for waste management and recycling to manufacturers and manufacturers
- Establishment of a national reimbursement program for beverage containers
- Establishing minimum standards for recycled content
- Loss of certain single-use plastic products that are not recyclable
- Ban the export of plastic waste to developing countries
- Impose a moratorium on new and expanding plastic plants until the Environmental Protection Agency updates and establishes important environmental and health regulations for these plants.
