Life Without Electricity in Lebanon
No Description
Access to reliable, affordable electricity is a human right
(Beirut, March 9, 2023) - Lebanese authorities have failed to uphold the right to electricity by decades of mismanaging the sector, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today.
The 127-page report, 'Cut Off from Life Itself': Lebanon's Failure on the Right to Electricity, argues that electricity is fundamental to almost every aspect of living and participating in society today, and as such is internationally protected The right to an adequate standard of living includes the right of everyone, without discrimination, to adequate, reliable, safe, clean, accessible and affordable electricity. Currently, the state provides electricity for an average of just one to three hours a day, while people who can afford it supplement that supply with private generators. The public sector and private generator industry depend on polluting, climate-intensive fossil fuels. The power crisis has exacerbated inequality in the country, severely curtailing people's ability to exercise their most basic rights and pushing them further into poverty.
